Update on Oil Spill Incident at Leicester Marina and Ongoing Cleanup Efforts

16th June 2025

Earlier this month, we were alerted to an oil and fuel spill at Leicester Marina. We responded immediately, engaging the Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Services, the Environment Agency (EA) and the RSPCA.

Specialist environmental protection crews and equipment were provided enabling the Fire Service to slow and contain the spill, stopping the oil from entering the River Soar. The crews assisted the RSPCA in rescuing a number of birds that had been covered in oil, although we are sad to report that a couple of swans and signets have died.

We are continuing to work with the EA to clean up the spill fully and there will be a team on site until this has completed. The Marina currently remains closed for movement of boats, and any injured wildlife found in the area should be reported straight to the RSPCA.

It appears that the source of the oil and fuel spill has come from the tipping of a large volume of oil into the surface water drainage system from the adjoining industrial estate. This information was passed onto the EA who have found the landowner and have launched a full investigation.

Thank you to all the marina residents who have cooperated fully with the clear up and the EA, Fire service and RSPCA for their assistance, speed of reaction and cooperation in this deplorable event.
